Page with "Electric DISCO Starter" Memorabilia

Format

Paper envelopes on paper.

Date

c. 1912

Location

Detroit, Michigan, USA.

Description

This page commemorates Claude S. Buchanan's first "Detroit job" with his payroll envelopes affixed to the page. The Electric DISCO Starter referenced on the envelope was an ignition starter company based in Detroit, Michigan, just the starting place for an ambitious young engineer such as Claude. The Electric DISCO Starter is described in a January 1912 edition of "The Automobile" as "The starter of this name is made by the Ignition Starter Co., Detroit, Mich. It is simply a device which enables the operator to inject a small amount of gas into each of the cylinders of his engine, which gas forms an explosive mixture only when mixed with the air in the cylinders. This mixture is ignited by the spark in the usual way, thereby putting the motor in motion and making it pick up its regular cycle of operation. The Discо is a high-pressure system, the charge being sent to the cylinders under the pressure of the ordinary acetylene tank."
